Chaikhana Cowl

In Uzbekistan, the Chaikhana (Tea House) is far more than a place to drink tea. It is a gathering place where conversations linger, friendships deepen, and stories unfold slowly over bowls of fragrant green tea. For generations these teahouses have been part of everyday life, welcoming travelers, neighbors, and friends to pause, rest, and share time together. The Chaikhana Cowl is inspired by the rich visual language found in these spaces. The motif echoes the stylized cotton flower, a symbol deeply woven into Uzbek culture and often seen decorating traditional teapots and teacups in the chaikhana, as well as textiles and ceramics. The pattern also draws inspiration from the intricate blue tilework that adorns ancient mosques, where repeating geometric forms create a sense of harmony and rhythm. For me, this design is also deeply personal. It brings back memories of childhood summers filled with heat and light, the delicate fragrance of freshly brewed tea, and the cool touch of silk dresses against the skin. These small sensory moments, woven together with tradition and ornament, shaped the feeling behind this pattern. Like the patterns that decorate the ceramics and tiles of a Chaikhana, the stitches of this cowl come together in a repeating motif that feels timeless and comforting. It is a small tribute to memory, tradition, and the quiet beauty of gathering over tea. For this pattern you will need 3 skeins of different colors of Rowan Norwegian Wool or similar DK wool. Color 1: 013 Coastal Fjord (38 grams, 104 yards) Color 2: 014 Cloud Dancer (20 grams, 55 yards) Color 3: 012 Gold Nugget (5 grams, 14 yards) Needles: 3.5 mm (US size 4) 16” ( 40 cm) circular needles Finished Measurements: : width 11” (28 cm) x depth 7” (18 cm) Gauge: 26 st x 26 rows equals 4 inches (10 cm) in colorwork pattern. This cowl is worked from the bottom up in the round, starting with 1x1 corrugated ribbing. The body of the cowl is worked from a colorwork chart. After the colorwork pattern has been finished, the corrugated ribbing is repeated.
