Helsinki Carousel

This beret was inspired by the song *Carnival* by The Cardigans and by memories of Helsinki’s Britpop club scene. The pinwheel-like cable motif and pom-pom give the beret a playful 1960s feel. The final shape is achieved by blocking the beret over a plate. SIZES 1 (2) FINISHED MEASUREMENTS **Circumference (unstretched):** 17.25 (19)" / 43.5 (48) cm. To fit head circumference of: 20.5–21.25 (22–22.75)" / 52–54 (56–58) cm. **Diameter:** approx. 9.75 (10.75)" / 25 (27) cm. MATERIALS **Yarn:** 1 skein of Recycled Manta wool yarn by Vuonue (70% Finnish wool, 30 % wool recycled in Finland, 197 yds / 180 m – 100 g), in the colourway Medium Gray. Or approx. 159 (175) yds / 145 (160) m of aran-weight yarn. Alternative yarn suggestions are for example Karstalanka 180x3 by Pirtin Kehräämö or Aran Tweed by Isager. **Needles:** US 1.5 / 2.5 mm 16" / 40 cm circular needles, US 2.5 / 3 mm 16" / 40 cm circular needles, US 2.5 / 3 mm DPNs. **Notions:** Cable needle, stitch markers. GAUGE 16 sts x 31 rnds to 4" / 10 cm on US 2.5 / 3 mm needles in St St and Cable Patt, after blocking. CONSTRUCTION This cabled beret is worked in the round from the band to the top of the crown. The work begins with twisted ribbing. After an increase round that follows the ribbing, the Cable Patt is worked according to the charts, and the beret is shaped with increases followed by decreases. Finally, the remaining yarn is used to make a pom-pom, which is attached to centre top.
