Beyond the Basics Textured Cowl Pattern Description The Beyond the Basics Textured Cowl is a technique-rich DK weight project by Castle Craft Collective. Originally designed for a five-week, in-person Knit-a-Long, it offers the same engaging learning experience as our Beyond the Basics Textured Shawl in a smaller, more accessible project. Worked sideways and flat, the cowl takes you through seven beautifully textured stitch patterns, separated by bands of garter stitch and half-twisted rib. Along the way you’ll explore cables, bobbles, lace, eyelets, and a variety of short-row techniques, building confidence as each new section introduces another skill. As the pattern says, “you don’t need a huge project to learn big skills”—and this cowl proves it. Once complete, the cast-on and cast-off edges are grafted together to create a seamless loop, while integrated short rows ensure the finished cowl sits comfortably around the neck and shoulders. Whether you’re taking your first steps beyond the basics or simply looking for a satisfying texture sampler, this pattern offers an enjoyable knit with plenty of opportunities to expand your skills. Size & Fit Finished size: Approximately 25 cm (10 in) tall and 60 cm (24 in) in circumference. The cowl is designed to sit comfortably around the neck as a close-fitting loop, with gentle shaping created by the integrated short rows for a natural fit over the shoulders, but it can be knitted without the short rows too. The pattern is written in one size. Gauge The pattern is designed using DK weight yarn on 4 mm (US 6) needles. As this project features a variety of textured stitch patterns, gauge may vary slightly between sections—cables naturally draw in, lace opens out and bobbles add depth. This is completely normal, and blocking will beautifully even out the finished fabric. If you’d like to check your gauge, aim for approximately 20–22 stitches and 28–30 rows over 10 cm (4 in) in stocking stitch after blocking. Materials * Yarn: 100 g DK weight yarn (approximately 220–250 m / 240–275 yds) * Needles: 4 mm (US 6) straight or circular needles * Tapestry needle for grafting and weaving in ends * Stitch markers (optional) * Cable needle (optional – cables may also be worked without one) The pattern is ideal for showcasing a favourite hand-dyed skein or making the most of a treasured yarn from your stash. One 100g skein is all you need to complete the project.
