It features a simple, versatile shape that works well on its own or layered, highlighted by chain‑stitch edging that traces the outline of the garment. To begin, the back shoulders are shaped with short rows and then worked back and forth to the underarms. Stitches for each front are picked up along the back shoulder edges and worked back and forth with the neckline shaping. The fronts are then joined to the back at the underarms. After the underarm gussets at both sides are shaped, the body is worked flat to the hem ribbing. Ribbed armhole bands, neckband, and front bands are worked from picked-up stitches. Finally, the neckband, front bands, and hem are bound off together to create a seamless, continuous chain edge. Because the vest is worked from the top down, the body length can easily be adjusted by trying it on.
