Seoid Cowl

**About:** My love of and obsession with friendship bracelets started early, and hit me hard. I made them every chance I could get. While I was working on one, I was dreaming up the next. I think it was truly the beginning of my love affair with graphic patterns—and likely design. But my love of balance and color came earlier, my ability to simply know if this goes with that or if I need a little more or less of something. This was a gift, from my mom. I'm not sure if it came from being around her and watching what she was doing or if it was in the genes she passed down to me. She taught me visual balance and balance is the key to everything I do. Even though she is no longer here, her influence always is. That's why I named this the Seoid (SHOW-dd) Cowl. Seoid in Irish means 'gem' or 'precious object/thing'. That's what I feel this gift I was given is. Precious. And with this precious gift I create. Freely and often. This 3-color, fingering-weight cowl is all about balance and finding ways to balance three motifs that are cousins, not sisters. Like generations—grandmother, mother, daughter—each beautiful in their own way, yet you see that they're related. But each have their own characteristics that make them beautiful—and unique. The Seoid Cowl is about that preteen girl who fell in love with design and graphic patterns because of the gift she was passed. And about the wonderful things I get to create because of the gift I was so freely given. This design comes with the main chart and 2 variations, each with a light on dark and dark on light chart, created just for you. That way, you don't have to swap colors in your head. It also has modifications on how to make it a bit roomier and links to helpful tutorials. I hope this cowl allows you to create something you truly love. **Needle:** US 4 (3.5 mm), 16” (40 cm) circular needle or needles needed to get gauge. **Suggested Yarn:** Knitting for Olive, Merino, Fingering weight, 1 skein each of three colors, [100% extra-fine Merino wool; 273 yards (250 m)/ 100 grams] or any fingering-weight yarn of your choosing. **Sample uses:** Main Color: Dark Cognac, approx. 115 yds (105 m) Contrast Color 1: Cream, approx. 70 yards (64 m) Contrast Color 2: Mustard, approx. 55 yards (50 m) **Gauge:** 27.5 stitches/28.5 rounds = 4” (10 cm) square in colorwork using US 4 (3.5 mm) needles or whatever size needle gives you the fabric you would like. **Other Notions:** 1 BOR marker, 11 stitch markers for colorwork repeats (optional but suggested to make things easier), darning needle **Special Techniques:** Knit & purl, colorwork, working from charts, cast on & bind off. **Sizes:** One size **Final Measurements:** 21” (53 cm) circumference x 10” (25.5 cm) tall.
