Kismet Cowl

The Kismet Cowl features the same colourwork pattern as the Kismet sweater, which was the fifth design of my Ffrench Collection. Kismet is full of small repeating patterns of music (called ostinati) that dance and flow around each other. This design explores these ideas through the use of both pattern and colour. SAMPLE The wearer is 5’10” / 178 cm with a 37” / 92.5 cm chest circumference. The tubular cowl sample has been worked in size Adult 1. The cowl sample has been worked in size Adult 2. SIZING GUIDE The accessory is available in two construction methods: a cowl or a tubular cowl. Each construction option comes in three sizes: Child (Adult 1, Adult 2). Cowl Circumference: 19.75 (21.75, 24)" / 49 (54.5, 60) cm. Cowl Height: 8.5 (10.25, 12)" / 21 (25.5, 30) cm. Tubular Cowl Circumference: 19 (22.75, 22.75)" / 47.5 (57, 57) cm. Tubular Cowl Height: 6.5 (9.75, 11)" / 16.5 (24.5, 27.5) cm. COWL CONSTRUCTION The cowl is worked bottom up, in the round. Stitches are cast on for the neckhole circumference and a section of half-twisted ribbing is worked initially. Once complete, stranded colourwork is worked with four colours (although only two colours are used on any given round). Another section of half-twisted ribbing is worked to complete the top of the cowl. TUBULAR COWL CONSTRUCTION The cowl is worked sideways, in the round. A provisional cast on with a crochet chain is used to start the cowl, after which stranded colourwork is worked with four colours (although only two colours are used on any given round) until cowl circumference is reached. The colourwork charts will be worked twice through the length of the cowl with 2 rnds of stockinette separating the repeats. The cowl is joined using kitchener stitch to graft the ends together; the ends can be joined straight or with a twist in the length of the cowl to suit personal preference. GAUGE Using 4 mm / US size 6 needles, or needle size required to meet gauge, 22 stitches over 26 rounds in both stockinette stitch and colourwork, wet blocked, creates a 4x4”/10x10 cm square. YARN The samples have been worked using fingering / sock -weight yarns held double. Gauge can also be achieved working with DK weight yarn.
