West Village Skirt

A knitted skirt is a wonderful item to have in one's wardrobe. They are comfortable, warm, elegant. However, it is not always easy to find a pattern that will fit properly. I have had to modify the ones that I made for myself and others so I created a method that has worked well. I am sharing this with you! This is essentially a recipe that will work for any body shape and any size. The pattern walks you through making the calculations to make a straight skirt with a folder-over waist with elastic that you can adjust to your liking. While the basic recipe is for a straight skirt with stocking stitch and ribbing at the bottom, you can, as the creator of your own skirt, make it with a stitch pattern, cables, lace, longer or shorter. MATERIALS AND INFO: Yarn quantity: anywhere from 400 to 1000 yards depending on the weight, size and length of the skirt. Yarn type: Any yarn can be used here but a couple of things to consider: - Non-superwash will generally work very well. -Superwash can be drapey, but isn’t always. I have used Patons DK superwash knit at a tight gauge – this held its shape very well due to the yarn properties. I would be less inclined, however, to use a luxury superwash merino that has drape, as I would fear it may sag. -100% cotton is quite likely to sag in the bottom. It is likely to work better in a blended yarn when using plant fibres. - if you are a mohair lover like me, I see no harm in double stranding your main yarn with some mohair! THAT will be one warm skirt!! Gauge: the knitter determines the gauge. Generally, a tighter gauge will create a better fabric for the skirt Notions: tapestry needle, stitch markers, elastic for waist.
