Hennessey Houndstooth Hot Water Bottle Cover

The Hennessey Houndstooth Hot Water Bottle Cover is knit bottom up in the round, starting with Judy’s Magic Cast On and using increases to shape the bottom of the cover. The bottom and sides are knit in the main colour and the houndstooth pattern is repeated on the front and the back. At the top of the bottle, decreases are used to shape it to the neck opening, and then it is finished with a rib collar and Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Cast Off. There are two sizes, the small to fit a 500ml and the large to fit a 2 litre hot water bottle. There is nothing too complicated in this pattern, and I think it would be suitable for anyone from an adventurous beginner up. The techniques involved are the knit stitch, purl stitch, increasing and decreasing stitches, working in the round, Judy’s Magic Cast On, Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Cast Off and stranded colourwork. Information Sizes – Small / Large to fit a 500ml and a 2 litre hot water bottle, respectively. Gauge – Approximately 22 stitches and 22 rows to 4 inches / 10 cm in pattern in the round on 4.5mm (US 7) needles when blocked (or another size to get the correct gauge). Yarn – DK weight yarn of 200m/100g For the main colour, used for the cast on, edges and neck ribbing as well as the houndstooth pattern, you will need about 45 / 90 meters and for the contrast colour, used only in the houndstooth pattern, you will need about 30 / 60 meters. Sample version is in Wooly Knit Warth Mill Yarn. You can use any average DK yarn, with 200m per 100g, but a woolly yarn will give the best look with the colourwork stitches. Needles – 4mm & 4.5mm (US 6 & 7) circular needles and/or DPN’s (or another size needle to get the gauge, making sure that you still go down one size of needle for the ribbing).
