Meandering Overlay Mosaic

**A totally FREE and informal Mystery Crochet Along (MCAL) running throughout October 2026.** Please note, the nature of this project means that, unlike my usual work, the charts and written instructions won’t be tested before release, and I can’t give you yarn requirements in advance … but if you have a stash of yarn to draw from and can accept that there maybe a few little errors, I would love you to join me on my Meander. _________________________________________________________________ After seeing various references to **Chaos Blankets** popping up in my feed, I just had to find out what they were all about, and a quick internet search says: “A chaos blanket is a crochet or knit project where colours, stitches, and row counts are chosen randomly … resulting in a unique, unpredictable design.” Personally, I’m not very good at being totally “random”, but I like the idea of starting a project without knowing what the end result will be … whilst aiming at a reasonably balanced design … basically not so much ‘chaos’, as gentle ‘meander’. I want to make some 48 x 60 inch blankets for residents of a local Hospice, so I thought that would be an ideal project for me to begin with. You can make any size you wish, just make sure you start with a **multiple of 24 + 5 stitches**, as I will ensure that pattern repeats for all designs will fit into 24 stitches. Alternatively, if you start with a multiple of 48 + 5 stitches, you will also be able to incorporate any of the motifs from most of my other mosaic crochet designs, including [Adventures in Overlay Mosaic][1], [Lakenham Mosaic Sampler][2] and [Happy Space][3]. All parts will use the **Overlay Mosaic Crochet** technique. If you are unfamiliar with this technique, I have a range of videos on my [Rosina Crochets][4] YouTube channel, including this little tutorial which explains both the basics of overlay mosaic crochet, and how to make a basic envelope border: [https://youtu.be/rSIbUgXyQ9A][5] (righthanded); [https://youtu.be/kiTumIyL7Q8][6] (lefthanded). • **My plan is to create each new chart as I go along**, choosing the colours from my stash as I go. • To keep the design of my blanket balanced, I will repeat each chart, but rather than always working on top of the previous row, I will rotate my work 180 degrees after each first repeat, to create a mirror image of the design, with the starting motif in the centre. • I’m not sure yet if I will use the same colours for each repeat, or switch them around. • **I expect to be producing a new chart every 2 or 3 days**, but this is only an estimation, as I don’t know how tall each motif will be, or how much time I will have to dedicate to this project. All being well, I hope to have a blanket in the required size by the end of October. • I will add photos of each part to this listing, as I complete them. To simplify the abbreviations, and avoid the need for separate UK and US versions, the pattern will be written in my **’Universal’ terms** (I developed these terms for the Jacquard Temperature Blanket and have also used them in all my subsequent overlay mosaic crochet CALs and patterns).
