Brunel Cowl

The Brunel Cowl is one of six patterns in issue six of John Arbon Textiles’ in house magazine, The Annual. [There are kits available for this pattern.][1] Named after the celebrated and influential British engineer of the 19th century, the Brunel Cowl and Shawl is a nostalgic nod to bandanas worn by steam train stokers, which they used to stop coal dust getting down their shirts and to keep them warm in winter. This pattern is perfect for a touch of luxury using Seafarer or Yarnadelic Sport. Knitted flat, both the cowl and shawl are started at the bottom ribbing, with the cowl joined later in the round. Featuring a series of playful stitches and yarn-overs that gently reveal an aerial view of charming steam trains, their huge wheels rolling powerfully along the tracks. **Yarn** Sport - 75g [Seafarer][2] (Sport; 300m / 328yd per 100g) Sample shown in Selkie [Yarnadelic][3] (Sport; 333m / 364yd per 100g) Sample shown in Harmonium (song for A) **Sizes** Cowl (Shawl) **Finished Measurements** a - Circumference: 53cm / 20.75” b - Front depth: 26.5cm / 10.5” **Gauge** Measured over Stocking Stitch worked flat using larger needles for main body and bottom rib, after blocking: 26 sts x 35 rows = 10cm / 4” square **Needles** Smaller: 3mm (UK 11 / US 2½) circular knitting needles for top ribbing, length 40cm / 16” for cowl or 80cm / 32” for shawl Larger: 3.25mm (UK 10 / US 3) circular knitting needles for main body and bottom rib, length 40cm / 16” cowl or 80cm / 32” for shawl Largest: 3.75mm (UK 9 / US 5) circular knitting needles for cast on, length 40cm / 16” for cowl or 80cm / 32” for shawl *Always use a needle size that results in the correct gauge after blocking.* **The Annual (issue six)** [This pattern is currently only available in print or digital.
