Also in Portugal, the square in front of the capital’s town hall is very special: all Lisboetas hope that the national football league’s champion will be received there once a year. Although opinions differ whether that should be Benfica or Sporting… On the anniversary of the revolution, the town hall opens its doors to everyone and you can look down onto the square from the balcony of champions. What you will see is a beautiful but simple graphic design of the Calçada Portuguesa with a very special multidimensional effect. The original pattern repeat is actually quite elaborate. For the socks, I designed a significantly simplified version that creates a sense of depth, much like the original design. *Der Platz vor dem Rathaus der Hauptstadt ist auch in Portugal ein ganz besonderer: Alle Lisboetas hoffen, dass dort einmal im Jahr die Mannschaft des nationalen Fußballmeisters empfangen wird. Nur, ob es die von Benfica oder Sporting ist – da scheiden sich die Geister… Am Jahrestag der Revolution öffnet das Rathaus seine Türen für alle und man kann vom Balkon der Meister herabschauen. Dabei entdeckt man ein wunderschönes, aber einfach konstruiertes grafisches Muster der Calçada Portuguesa mit einer außergewöhnlichen räumlichen Wirkung. Eigentlich ist der Original-Rapport ziemlich umfangreich. Für die Socken habe ich eine deutlich vereinfachte Version entworfen, die ähnlich wie das große Vorbild eine Tiefenwirkung entfaltet.*
