Beyond the Basics Textured Shawl The Beyond the Basics Textured Shawl is a richly textured, skill-building triangular shawl designed to grow with you as a knitter. Worked flat from a full cast-on edge and tapered to a point with side decreases, the shawl features an elegant i-cord edge and seven beautifully textured stitch-pattern sections. Each section introduces a different technique—from cables and bobbles to lace, eyelets and honeycomb textures—framed by garter stitch and half-twisted rib bands that create rhythm, structure and flow throughout the design. As the shawl gradually decreases, the textures become increasingly striking, creating a beautifully balanced triangular shape. Designed by Castle Craft Collective, this pattern builds on foundational knitting skills while gently encouraging knitters to learn new techniques with confidence. Whether you choose lightweight fingering yarn for a breezy summer wrap or cosy Aran yarn for a luxurious winter shawl, the pattern adapts beautifully across multiple yarn weights. Originally developed as a six-week guided Knit-A-Long, this pattern is equally suited to independent knitters and knitting teachers looking for a structured workshop or KAL project. Sizes The shawl is intentionally flexible and can be knitted in a range of yarn weights. Finished dimensions will vary depending on yarn choice, gauge and blocking. Seven textured stitch-pattern sections are separated by garter stitch and half-twisted rib bands, giving the shawl both definition and flow. An i-cord selvedge is maintained throughout the entire project, producing a smooth, polished edge that beautifully frames every textured panel. The final stitches are grafted using Kitchener stitch to seamlessly close the i-cord at the shawl’s tip. Designer’s Notes Created by Castle Craft Collective, the Beyond the Basics Textured Shawl was inspired by the supportive knitting community surrounding their workshops in Lincoln. Originally written as the pattern for our six-week, in-person Knit-A-Long (KAL), the shawl has been carefully structured so knitters learn new techniques in manageable stages. Each week’s knitting introduces a fresh collection of textures and skills, allowing participants to build confidence while creating a beautiful finished shawl. The pattern is therefore ideal not only for individual knitters, but also for yarn shops, knitting teachers, guilds and community groups wishing to run their own guided Knit-A-Long. With seven clearly defined textured sections and a natural week-by-week progression, it provides an engaging teaching project that encourages discussion, skill development and shared achievement. Whether you’re knitting at home, alongside friends or leading a class, this pattern has been designed to help knitters move confidently beyond the basics while creating a shawl they’ll be proud to wear for years to come. More than just a shawl, this is a celebration of your knitting journey—a project that showcases your growing skills, your favourite yarn and your own unique style.
