The *Veil of the Low Countries* is part of the *In Word and Thread* series, a collection of textile works dedicated to victims of the European witch trials. This veil commemorates Entgen Luyten, who was executed in Limbricht in 1674.
Knitted from 100% organic linen, the veil combines traditional lace knitting with historical symbolism. Its half-moon shape evokes the moon as a symbol of transition, intuition, and the threshold between the visible and the invisible. The lace motif itself is rooted in traditional lace-knitting heritage and is used here as the foundation for a contemporary memorial piece.
A black edging serves as a mourning border, marking loss and remembrance. Small crosses incorporated into the design refer to the simple marks used by people who could not write their names. Many victims of the witch trials signed their confessions with such crosses, often after interrogation, coercion, or torture. Their handwriting has not been preserved; only these simple signs remain as witnesses to lives that history nearly forgot.
Exact gauge is not critical for this project. As with all lace projects, blocking is essential to fully open the pattern and reveal the details of the lacework.
Sample was work in color nr. 1-7100 Crème.
This pattern is offered free of charge. By knitting this veil, you help carry a name, a story, and a memory forward, in word and thread.
