The 11th pattern in the Memories Socks series takes us to Rhinebeck. After a little break from the series, the New York Sheep and Wool Festival weekend in 2025 was such a highlight that there was no way I could let it pass without a dedicated pair of socks.
The colourwork motif reflects that sense of everything happening at once — several ornaments interlinked into something intricate and impressive, much like the weekend itself. The main colour is a gradient sock set I picked up at Rhinebeck, and I paired it with some speckled mohair from my leftovers as the contrast colour for extra interest. It’s a great stash busting opportunity!
This is a toe-up design with a sole gusset and a slip-stitch heel flap. There is a small amount of Ladderback Jacquard, and the pattern includes charts with suggested placements as well as chart options for lighter and darker main colours. A detailed [video tutorial][1] for a very similar project is available if you'd like extra guidance.

- 195 (240, 280, 330) yds
**Contrast colour**:

Yarn used in sample (size 2) is 2 cakes of Whitebirch Fiber Arts Gradient Sock Set (80% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon; 183 m [200 yds] / 50 g) as main colour (MC) and around 9 g of Moondrake Kinu Momo (60% Kid Mohair, 40% Mulberry Silk; 300 m [330 yds] / 25 g) held with a strand of around 26 g of Peacock Yarn 100% Tencel Fingering (100% Tencel; 400 m [437 yds] / 100 g) in colourway Marshmallow Cloud as contrast colour (CC).
**Suggested needles**: 2.25 mm (US 1) or size that achieves the required gauge circulars or DPNs for small circumference knitting.
**Notions**: Stitch markers, row counter, tape measure, removable stitch markers or bobby pins, tapestry needle.
**Techniques used**: Judy's Magic cast-on, Japanese short rows, lifted increases, stranded colourwork, Ladderback Jacquard, Tubular bind-off.
**Construction notes**: These socks start from the toe using Judy's Magic cast-on. We shape the toe with lifted increases. When we reach the instep, the contrast colour is joined and we follow the colourwork chart. Rather than the sides, we place the gusset increases at the bottom of the sole. We shape the bottom of the heel using short rows, then a slip-stitch heel flap is worked back and forth in the main colour. We follow the colourwork chart again for the leg until we reach the preferred length and finish with a 1x1 twisted rib and Tubular bind-off.
