Broken Rib Scarf

This is one of my favourite stitch repeats. I put this nearly complete pattern (yarn amount and finished length are estimates) together for a learner who wanted to keep practicing their stitching. Pattern publishes Saturday, May 16th, 2026. **FINISHED MEASUREMENTS** 8” / 20 cm W x approx. 80” / 203 cm L **MATERIALS** ARAN WEIGHT YARN: approx. 5 skeins CaMaRose Snefnug (55% Alpaca, 35% Cotton, 10% Extra Fine Merino, 120 yds / 110 m – 1.76 oz. / 50 g) in the colourway Gylden. Or approx. 600 yds / 550 m in an equivalent yarn. **SUGGESTED NEEDLE SIZE** US 8 / 5 mm needles, either 9-10” / 23-25.5 cm long straight needles or 24-32” / 60-80 cm long circular needles. Or needle size needed to meet the pattern’s gauge. NOTIONS: tapestry needle, scissors. **GAUGE** 17 sts x 24 rows = 4 x 4” / 10 x 4.5 cm, (in broken rib pattern) after blocking. NOTE: block the swatch (and finished scarf) following the washing instructions written on the ball band/tag on the yarn you’ve chosen to use. **NOTES** The scarf is worked flat from end to end. Once you know how to transition between knits and purls and can read your work, this is a good beginner-friendly project to practice your stitching. The written instruction for the scarf is a pattern recipe. Pattern recipes provide enough information for makers to knit the item but will include approximations. This recipe is based on calculations from a swatch knitted in CaMaRose Snefnug. The pattern is complete with number of skeins and pattern repeats as estimates.
