The French Golf is a sleeveless top with a two-color Art Deco design, based on a pattern originally published in 1929. It is knitted in fingering weight yarn, in two pieces (front and back), which are seamed together. The front features a simple intarsia motif, and the back is plain. After seaming, ribbing is worked around the square neckline. The armholes are finished with a row of single crochet, but you may knit ribbing around the armholes instead if you prefer.
Sizing is provided in two ways: fully calculated for one size (medium, 40" finished chest measurement) and with instructions for a made-to-measure version that can be made to anyone's measurements. The sample size used 157 grams of the main color and 25 grams of the contrast color
The intarsia motif is a simple one that is great for beginners to intarsia. There is one small section (21 rows tall) in which you'll be working with three balls or bobbins of yarn. Everything outside of that section is done with one color on its own. The intarsia is only used on the front piece, not the back.
This pattern is a modern adaptation of a vintage pattern published in French in 1929. The original had several errors and discrepancies, so by the time I figured them all out, I figured other modern, English-speaking knitters might like to benefit from my work :) The pattern is very simple to knit, and easy to modify. It is an ideal introduction to intarsia and to seamed garment construction.
