This design is the fifth of a series—twelve explorations of different stitch patterns throughout 2026—and the second of three projects focused on slipped stitches. This month, we’re building bricks. There are numerous ways of knitting brick patterns, so I’ve focused on my favourite technique, which features stocking stitch bricks and garter stitch mortar. Like mosaic knitting, the stitches are always slipped purlwise, with the yarn held to the wrong side of the work, but this stitch pattern combines garter stitch and stocking stitch, plain rows and slipped stitch rows. The sample square, or washcloth, features the smallest brick you can make, stacked squarely on top of one another, while the scarf pattern features a 3-stitch brick that is moved over 1 stitch with every layer. The pattern document also includes instructions for staggering your bricks in a more traditional, brick-like pattern. The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are: - cast on and bind off; - knit and purl; - slip a stitch with the yarn held to the back of the work, and slip a stitch with the yarn held to the front of the work.
