Sum of the Parts

Wingspan-style shawls can be a great chance to play with color and texture, especially when the thought of working an entire shawl of this kind in just one pattern and color would likely put me into a coma. The simple wedge shape of each section is the ideal place to experiment with a variety of stitch patterns, and here I chose several textured and small-scale lace stitches. Adding to that, considering the number of yarn companies and indie dyers who offer mini skeins either singly or in sets, the possibilities expand further. As I was knitting this shawl, I found that by using the limited color palette with a related dark color for the edging, the results exceeded my expectations. The name for this design came about when, as I was working up the original swatch, each part that was added made the design better and better looking. So the whole is indeed greater than the sum of the parts!
