This project makes 2 Norwegian-style colorwork mittens and is intended for a knitter with experience enough to work from and modify a chart with minimal instructions that uses more than two colors in a single row. **If made as shown, some rows will contain up to five colors on the front.** Alternatively, you can embroider the accent colors on the columbines using a duplicate stitch to avoid using so many colors per row.
Yardage: **This pattern uses 9-10 colors. Some of the colors require only up to a few yards of yarn. I do not recommend buying full skeins for this. I recommend purchasing yarn aimed at needlepoint or embroidery artists for these accent colors.** Wiltex Threads has some excellent options in merino wool (still under their "Vineyard Silk" line despite not containing silk), but I wasn't able to find their wool line listed in Ravelry.
The original mitts were made with home-dyed, handspun shropshire-wool yarn which is extremely felt-resistant; if you're making these with commercially available yarn, I recommend going up a needle size or two to allow for some shrinkage. The asymmetry can make it hard to control tension equally on both mittens, so I don't recommend using superwash wool because it's a lot less forgiving when it comes to blocking the final product.
This is a frankly impractical project and a labor of love to make, but I'm uploading this pattern in case anyone wants access to the charts. It could be a good scrap-buster.
