The hat that will get me cancelled during the Great Hat Debate of 2026. This hat and others like it could be seen as many things. Some will say it’s “Performative”. A meaningless gesture that has been created only for applause - like a photo op, a slogan without follow-through or a trend that doesn’t connect to any real change. But when your knit piece, like this hat or a red hat, is paired with actions that matter- volunteering, donating to immigrant justice funds, attending community protests or using your voice to advocate for accountability and reform - it becomes something that isn’t just a pretty way to stay warm. It could be a quiet testament to your values that CAN also spark communication and build community. So your hat becomes many things, none of which are meaningless. When a handmade object carries a “why” behind it (solidarity, justice, empathy), it becomes intentional support - not surface-level decoration. This pattern is an opportunity to knit resilience, not rage. This pattern has not been test knit. There is no math and I've knit the charts twice each with no issue. It is a free pattern. The hats shown in the photos have yet to be blocked. I recommend steam blocking to avoid much stretch as the hats are not snug fitting. I started with three skeins of Madelinetosh DK in the colors Onyx, Tart and Farmhouse White, plus one 50g skein of Big Bad Wool Weepaca in the color Water. I have made two hats as you see in these photos and have plenty left over to make a further two or three hats. You could also go down a needle size and yarn weight to get a smaller hat if the head you are knitting for is smaller that 21".
