The Shift Sleeves are worked flat from the wrist up in a 2x2 rib. Gradual increases are worked along the sleeve until the upper arm is reached. From there, decreases are worked, and the piece is then split into two sections to form the straps. To finish, the sleeve is seamed using mattress stitch. There are several variations of this sleeve. First, you can choose between a standard bracelet-length sleeve or a thumbhole version. The thumbhole option is worked slightly longer to cover part of the hand and includes a slit for the thumb. There are also multiple strap options: * Fixed straps, which are permanently connected at the front and back * Tie straps, with ties on both sides (you can work a single or pair of sleeves) * Hybrid option, a fixed strap on one side and a tie on the other **SIZING** The sleeves are designed to be worn with 30–40% negative ease at the upper arm, which corresponds to 2.75–5.25"/7–13 cm of negative ease, depending on the size. The sleeves are graded with proportional ease to ensure the ribbing stretches evenly across all sizes. While this may seem like a significant amount of negative ease, keep in mind that 2x2 ribbing can stretch to nearly twice its width, resulting in a snug yet comfortable fit. Size A (Size B) Size C (Size D) Size E To fit an upper arm measurement of: 8.5-9.5" (9.5-11") 11-12" (12-13") 13-14" 21.5-24cm (24-28cm) 28-30.5cm (30.5-33cm) 33-35.5cm Measure your upper arm at the widest point. **YARN** Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash (200 m / 220 yds per 100g ball) - Sulfur (370) or Drops Merino Extra Fine (105 m per 50g ball - Black (02) 250g (300g) 300g (350g) 350g If working only one sleeve, you may halve the yarn requirements. You can substitute for another DK weight yarn, provided you are able to obtain gauge. A wool with a a good stretch and drape, such as merino, is recommended. **NEEDLES & NOTIONS** 3.25mm needles or size needed to obtain gauge (the piece is worked flat, so you can either use straight needles or circulars) Tapestry needle Locking stitch markers Stitch holders or waste yarn **GAUGE** In 2x2 ribbing using 3.25mm needles, blocked and unstretched: 43 stitches and 33 rows = 4 x 4"/10 x 10cm
