Broken Accordion 2-1

Simple enough for a beginning knitter, this easy and easily memorized stitch pattern makes reversible a scarf that looks far more difficult than it is, and that can be knitted in almost any yarn at any gauge. It consists of two one-row patterns, knitted in layers. The stitch pattern, Broken Accordion 2-1 over 8 is from Cecelia Campochiaro's new book, Reversible Knitting, and is also the sample pattern she used on a teaching handout in her class. It is on page 108. Worked on a multiple of 6 + 1, plus two garter stitches each side for selvedge. Rows 1-8: K2, [K4, P4],K1. Rows 9-16: K3 [P2, K4]. Knitting on a smaller needle gives a more textured, nubbly effect, as in the first two examples. while knitting with a larger needle gives a flatter effect, as in the example from the Reversible Knitting book. Casting on four extra stitches--two at each edge---for a garter stitch selvedge makes the scarf lie flatter.
