Tesserae

“For this design I was inspired by the idea of a crisp walk through an autumnal forest and returning to the cabin for a cup of hot cocoa. I wanted to design a shawl that would be perfect for both experiences. The rustic feel of natural wool combined with the texture of the garter stitch and mosaic knitting gave me that cosy feeling I was looking for. The mosaic motif reminds me of undergrowth in a forest, which was perfect combined with the green shades of the sample.” – Sanni Pauliina Tesserae is a large triangle shawl. It begins with a garter tab at the top of the centre spine and is worked top-down, flat. Shaping is achieved with increases along the sides and centre spine. The shawl is worked with two colours and combines garter stitch and mosaic knitting; only one colour is used at a time. FINISHED MEASUREMENTS • Wingspan: 177.5 cm / 70” • Depth at spine: 92.5 cm / 36.5” YARN Tukuwool Fingering (100% Finnish wool; 370 metres / 405 yards per 100 g) MC: 350 metres / 385 yards CC: 920 metres / 1010 yards Sample shown is knit in colourways H36 Rohto (MC, light green) and H35 Havu (CC, dark green). NEEDLES 3.75 mm / US 5 circular needle with a cable length of at least 100 cm / 40” (or needle size to obtain gauge) This pattern uses the magic loop technique for its cast-on, which requires using a long circular needle.
