Saltless Sea was designed as part of A Verb for Keeping Warm’s Proverbial Yarn Club. Inspired by the vast, inland expanse of Lake Superior, this shawl pairs ethereal yarn with organic shaping to evoke the rhythm of waves, wind, and shifting sky. It’s a meditative knit that highlights the beauty of the club’s exclusive, naturally dyed colorways. Designed to be both engaging to knit and a joy to wear, “Saltless Sea” blends crisp garter stitch with airy yarnover lace. Crescent-shaped and subtly asymmetrical, the piece expands fluidly, mirroring the organic, ever-shifting forms of life on the water. **YARN** Main Color (MC): 1 Skein of A Verb for Keeping Warm’s METAMORPHOSIS sport weight yarn (70% Merino, 30% Silk, 385 yards / 352 meters per 115 grams). Colorway used for sample: “Castles in the Air” (rosy pink with purple). Contrast Color (CC): 1 Skein of A Verb for Keeping Warm’s FROND lace weight yarn (72% Kid Mohair, 28% Silk, 459 yards / 420 meters per 50 grams). Colorway used for sample: “Crystalline” (cornflower blue). **GAUGE** 16 stitches and 20 rows = 4ʺ / 10 cm in Garter Stitch, worked flat, on gauge needles, after blocking. **NEEDLES*** You’ll need one size of circular needles. First, knit a gauge swatch to determine the size needle that you need for the shawl. US Size 6 / 4 mm One 40ʺ / 100 cm circular needle in order to accommodate the eventual width of the shawl. If working on a very long needle when the shawl is small is uncomfortable for you, you could start with a shorter circular needle. *Always choose the needle size that you need in order to obtain the pattern’s gauge.
