Use code **THREE** through September > 30, 2026.) Sportweight/dk Modulator 3 is the easiest of the modulator series to knit! It’s still got some interesting shaping to engage more intermediate/advanced knitters, though, and is a nice way to show off some good handspun. The knitting is multi-directional, and you end up with a nice curved-ends crescent shape. The charm of this one is all in the shaping, and the sportweight handspun yarn lends it extra coziness and makes it a faster knit. Although anything include natural/neutral tones will work, the simple lines used here look great in flashy handspuns, kettle-dyed tonals like Malabrigo Yarn Arroyo, scraps, or, if you don’t spin your own but like the look, handspun-like yarns like Noro Silk Garden Sock. There’s also some flexibility in yarn weights with this pattern. Sport yarn gives you the full-size scarf or shawl as shown in the sample, but you can use sock yarns for a lighter mini-shawl, or go up to dk or worsted for more emphasis on the heavy textured coziness of garter stitch. Whatever your approach, Modulator 3 is a good canvas for showing off your yarn choices and personal style. It has minimal purling and shaping, making it ideal comfort or tv knitting for many. Your pattern purchase includes both printer-friendly (no photos after the cover page) and screen-friendly (more photos to illustrate techniques a little) versions of the pattern. **Materials:** * About 400-440 yards of sportweight yarn, ideally in a soft wool for next-to-the-skin wear; sample shown in handspun merino blend * 1 40”+ circular needle in US 5-7/3.75-4.5mm, or size needed for gauge * tapestry needle for weaving in ends * removable stitch markers—optional, but nice to have to easily keep track of progress/stitch counts. **Gauge:** Gauge is 19 sts and 26 rows over 4"/10cm of garter stitch, worked flat and blocked. This measurement is taken from the triangle section of the shawl. Please be sure to check your gauge. **Measurements:** As shown, this scarf measures 72/1.8m long and about 8.5"/22cm wide at its widest, after light wet blocking. This design can be knit in various yarns, but these measurements will vary considerably between yarn weights.
