A Hap for Harriet

**[Re-issued in 2021 as part of our Bluestocking project, with new kits available in a beautiful John Arbon yarn.][1]** *This sideways-knit, garter stitch hap with its sweeping openwork points was designed as a retirement gift for my good friend, colleague, and doctoral supervisor, Professor Harriet Guest. Harriet is the author of several wonderful books about eighteenth-century literature and culture. She is also a knitter.* The pattern includes two full sets of instructions: the first for knitters who prefer working from a chart and the second for those who prefer written instructions. **Construction** This hap is knit sideways, from end to end. The edging is worked together with the garter stitch body, and a long, shallow shape is achieved by working increases (or decreases) prior to the edging. The dimensions of this hap are flexible, and the pattern is perfect for making the most of a special skein of yarn: simply weigh your skein carefully before knitting, and follow the percentage instructions in the pattern. **Yarn** John Arbon Alpaca Supreme Heavy Lace in shade 'Mr Smoke'. 2 x 50g skeins. **Needles and notions** 3.25mm (UK 10/US 3) circular needles 60cm/24in or 80cm/32in long, or long straight knitting needles (use lace points if preferred).
