BLOKKEN

BLOKKEN is a lightweight comfortable unisex knitted scarf or shawl in silk & mohair yarns. The original scarf sample was made in the shades indigo or woad blue, rusty orange and natural white. These colours can be found in and produced by nature. The stockinette marled colour blocks of this scarf are placed in such a way that it resembles a gingham pattern of a woven plaid or blanket. Almost all yarn ends are woven in while knitting, only after binding off, the last three ends need to be woven in with a tapestry needle. Lace-weight mohair & silk yarn, two strands held together, yarn quantities (colour suggestions between brackets), [larger size between square brackets]: A 300 m (330 yards) (orange, dark) [[400 m (437 yards) (blue green, dark)]] B 340 m (375 yards) (white, light) [[560 m (612 yards) (grey, light)]] C 275 m (300 yards) (blue, dark) [[424 m (463 yards) (mint green, medium dark)] ] The knitting technique used here is a combination of marling and intarsia. Marling - which is holding multiple yarns together - creates interesting colour combinations. Intarsia is a colour knitting technique in which isolated surfaces of colour are created, dropping the yarns not in use, without carrying at the back of the fabric (as opposed to stranded colourwork). I would call this technique: “blended intarsia” or “marltarsia”. It allows for smooth yet clear transitions between the blocks.
