Kællingesjal 1897; recreation, Museum, Denmark

23.06.2016 This pattern is an attempt to recreate an authentic historic piece of clothing. I have seen three versions from North Jutland, Denmark, from about 1900. If you scroll down, you can see Mette Sofie Larsdatter, who was the wife of a shoemaker, sitting in her Sundays clothes. She was from Bindslev, Denmark, and the photo is from 1910. Please use this free pattern, however, it comes as it is :) The designers won’t be able to help with any queries. Many has knitted the shawl, which is quite simple, once you have "cracked the code". There are also groups on facebook who might be helpful. Have fun. It is a Danish tie-shawl.The kællingesjal is from 1897; it has elegant borders and a band of stockinette fabric. First I thought these were only ornamental elements added to the traditional tie-shawl. However, when I wrapped up in the finished shawl, crossed the wings across my chest, and tied the borders round my waist, I realized that these decorations had a practical use for the working woman who wore this scarf for everyday use. * The border ties up more comfortably than cords. * The band of stockinette fabric is more elastic than Garter Stitch. It snuggles up your shoulders and keeps your shawl in place. * The top border creates a useful lapel you can fold or unfold round your neck
