Happa Shawl

I designed this shawl in 2012 and have made more than 25 of them over the years, using different yarn weights and and hook sizes. This shawl works particularly well for using up skeins of yarn of similar weight because it’s very simple. There are only two pattern rows, and the second pattern row becomes the finished edge, with optional beading, which gives the lighter-weight yarn some body. You can make a picot edge for heavier yarns or if you don’t want beads. You can make an approximately 45” wide x 18 1/2” deep shawlette with one 100 gram (400-420 yards) skein of fingering yarn. If you use two skeins you’ll get a full-sized shawl of ~70” x 36”. Changing the weight of yarn will change the size as well. I give ball-park measurements & yarn amounts below. You will need yarn that can be blocked, so a it must have a significant natural-fibre content. The nylon content in sock wools doesn’t affect the blocking, so these work fine.
