Do you remember the colorful candy called – All Sorts? Does this vest remind you of them?
Originally, when I started thinking about this design, a simple all-over Fair Isle vest, I planned on making a vest without steeks. However, after realizing what a pain it is to work WS rows in Fair Isle knitting, I decided to give this technique a try, and I’m so glad I did. Steeks are very easy to reinforce and not as scary as you may think. As long as you are using a natural wool, then you should have no issue.
This vest is worked top down and features a simple 3 - color Fair Isle pattern, saddle shoulders, armhole shaping, and yes, those wonderful steeks. Once the horizontal saddles are constructed, the back and front sts are picked up and joined to work in the round with steeks for the neck and the armholes. Once the steeks are reinforced and cut, the neck and armhole edging sts are picked up and worked in the round. This is a perfect project for the beginner steek/Fair Isle knitter as both techniques are very beginner friendly.
