The Grand Shell stitch is the base for this pattern. It creates a wonderful curved edge and is a pattern with a lot of shape and texture. I used it for the August Fancy, the Grand Shell Collar. I was so pleased with the results that I decided to make a set. It is such a beautiful stitch. The Fancy line of projects grew out of the [Threads of Colour – A Year in Squares](https://www.facebook.com/groups/1587569399330205) and these litte projects have become quite my favourite part. Creating these small, interesting little things has made this year long exploration of pattern and technique project so much more than my original idea. This is a pattern for an experienced knitter, or a very adventurous one. The beads add an extra layer. But as always, beads are optional. Check this post - [Crafting Exquisite Beaded Knits – Tips and Inspiration](https://letissierdesigns96822434.wordpress.com/2026/06/19/crafting-exquisite-beaded-knits-tips-and-inspiration/), for more information on working with beads. The lace knitting is for the most part, standard but rows 8 and 9 offer a couple of challenges which are outlined in the special instructions. **October Fancy: Grand Shell Juliette Cap** is a beaded lace hat pattern for the knitter drawn to vintage silhouettes and fine-gauge detail work. The Juliette cap sits close to the crown in a fitted, decorative style with roots in bridal and theatrical millinery. Here it is reimagined in British Breeds 4ply wool with a sweeping **grand shell lace pattern**, a delicate **lace edging**, and the glint of **beads or pailettes** worked directly into the fabric. Expect a project that rewards patience and precision. Construction and Technique -------------------------- • **Worked in the round, seamless, bottom-up**: the cap begins at the brim and closes at the crown • **Grand shell lace pattern**: a wide, dramatic shell repeat that creates flowing, fan-like columns across the cap body • **Lace edging** at the brim for a finished, heirloom-quality border • **Beads or pailettes** threaded before casting on and placed as the lace is worked; a crochet hook for bead placement is recommended • Skill level: adventurous; confident lace knitting and bead placement experience expected Materials --------- • **4ply (fingering) weight yarn**; sample knit in Cotswold 4ply, British Breeds, a wool with excellent stitch definition that holds lace structure beautifully • Yardage: approximately 100-135 yards (91-123 m) • Needles: **US 4 (3.5 mm)** circular or DPNs • **Gauge: 19 sts over 3.5 in (9 cm) in pattern repeat** • Notions: beads or pailettes to suit, fine crochet hook for bead placement Sizing ------ • **Small, Medium, Large** with additional sizing notes included in pattern • Designed to fit teens (13-17) through adults • Juliette cap style sits at the crown rather than pulling down over the ears; head circumference and placement notes provided What's Included --------------- • English-language PDF with full written instructions • Sizing and fit notes • Guidance on bead selection and pre-threading method A cap worked in fine wool with bead-studded lace is a statement piece: wearable as a bridal accessory, a holiday occasion hat, or simply the kind of thing a devoted lace knitter makes for the pleasure of making it. **October Fancy** delivers all of that in a single, satisfying project.
