Stan the Spider (& Web)

This is a written crochet pattern for “Stan the Spider (& Web)”. Instructions are included that explain how to make a low-sew amigurumi spider, as well as a spider web doily. Stan the spider’s appearance is very loosely based on a red knee tarantula. The joints/bends in the legs are achieved purely through crochet shaping (pipe cleaners can optionally be used to make the spider legs posable, though I personally did not use them). This spider would be great as Halloween décor, however can also be enjoyed throughout the year. The pattern is available in both US and UK terms. The PDF file is 16 pages long with detailed instructions and lots of photos. In addition to Ravelry, this pattern is also available on my Etsy store to purchase. Pattern testers identified the legs as a challenging aspect of the pattern, and therefore this pattern is only recommended for advanced/more ambitious crocheters. Some of the crochet stitches/techniques used in this pattern are (stated here in US terms) MR, sc, dc, tr, dtr, inc, dec, dc2tog, v-stitch, working into ch-sps, colour changing, crocheting pieces together, sewing pieces together, blocking etc. Written descriptions of less common stitches (the dtr, dc2tog and v-stitch) are given as reminders. One speciality/advanced stitch is also used (bobble stitch) - a detailed tutorial with images explains how to complete this. All pieces are worked in continuous rounds, except the spider web doily which is worked in joined rounds. This pattern is considered low sew as the only pieces that need to be sewn together is the abdomen to the head. No embroidery is required. Materials & Tools Required: • Yarn in three different colours (all in the same yarn weight category as each other). • A crochet hook suitable for your yarn weight. • Safety eyes (ideally in various sizes). • Toy stuffing • Pins and a surface to block the doily on. • Scissors • Tapestry/finishing needle • Stitch marker (recommended) • Pins to help with assembly/sewing (optional) • Pipe cleaners or wire (optional) Using a 3mm hook and DK weight yarn my finished spider was 15cm (5.75 inch) long (not incl. the ‘arms’), 5cm (2 inch) tall and 18cm (7 inch) wide (i.e. the ‘leg span’). The finished spider web doily was 27cm (10.5 inch) after blocking.
