The shorts are worked top down in a 1x1 broken rib stitch. They are designed to sit mid waist and have a tight fit. Begin by casting on stitches for the waistband. Gradual increases are worked at each side until the full hip is reached. Short rows are then worked to shape the back. A gusset is worked for the crotch, after which the legs are divided and worked individually in the round. The pattern includes options to work a short or longer length. Each leg is finished with a double knit band at the hem. Finally the waistband is completed with an i-cord edging, creating a channel for elastic to be threaded through.
SIZING
The shorts are graded with proportional ease to ensure the ribbing stretches evenly across all sizes. They are designed to fit with approximately 15% negative ease, equivalent to 10-25cm. Smaller sizes have less negative ease, while larger sizes have more. Below are the recommended sizes to chose based on your body measurements for a fit with 15% negative ease. On the next page, you will find a chart with a schematic and the finished garment measurements.
If you prefer a tighter fit, consider sizing down. If you are between sizes, size down.
Size 1, 2, 3, 4 (5, 6, 7, 8) 9, 10, 11, 12 (13, 14, 15, 16).
Designed to fit a waist circumference of:
60, 65, 70, 75 (80, 85, 90, 95) 100, 105, 110, 115 (120, 125, 130, 135)cm.
To fit a hip circumference of:
80, 85, 90, 95 (100, 105, 110, 115) 120, 125, 130, 135 (140, 145, 150, 155)cm.
To fit a thigh circumference of:
46, 49, 52, 55 (58, 61, 64, 67) 70, 73, 75, 78 (81, 84, 87, 90).
Measure the waist at the narrowest point, hip at the widest point of the hips and seat and the thigh at the widest part, usually just below the crotch.
A schematic and full garment measurements can me found in the pattern.
YARN
For the shorter length:
2, 2, 2, 2 (3, 3, 3, 3) 3, 3, 3, 4 (4, 4, 4, 4) skeins Malabrigo Arroyo (100g = 306m), shown in colour Chircas (45).
For the longer length:
2, 3, 3, 3 (3, 3, 3, 4) 4, 4, 4, 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) skeins Malabrigo Arroyo (100g = 306m), shown in colour Chircas (45).
If substituting yarn, choose a fibre with good elasticity, merino wool is recommended. The yarn should have plenty of bounce and stretch to ensure a comfortable, well-fitting garment. I also recommend choosing something with a similar yardage to Arroyo (100g = 306m). If you are unsure, Yarnsub.com is a great resource for finding alternative yarns.
As these shorts are worn close to the skin, it’s important that the fabric feels comfortable. You may wish to ‘wear’ your gauge swatch by tucking it into the waistband of your trousers for a day to check for any itchiness or irritation.

3mm circular needles, 60-80cm and 40-60cm (or needle sizes needed to obtain gauge)

1.5mm elastic cord, choose a colour that is similar to your yarn

30 stitches and 44 rows = 10cm in broken rib after blocking
To work a swatch flat: CO an odd number of sts
Row 1 (rs): k to end.
Row 2 (ws): *p1, k1* to 1 st bef end, p1.
Rep rows 1 & 2.
