Clubbie Beanie

*Born out of cold Winter mornings in the pool and chilly afternoon paddles in the surf, the Clubbie Beanie pays homage to the extreme training conditions competitive surf lifesavers endure in the off-season; but more particularly those in the southern states of Australia. This cosy 4ply/fingering beanie features a snug but shallow silhouette, much like a comp or clubbie cap. Its surface is adorned with lifesaving club competition caps. This beanie takes its name from the Australian colloquial term for volunteer surf club patrollers.* *Use the included charts and handy tips to replicate your own surf club cap using a combination of stranded colourwork and duplicate stitch. A chart to work the classic red and yellow patrol cap on your beanie is also included. Make a note that your donation is for the Senior Surf Comp Team.** **Construction:** Clubbie Beanie is knit from the brim upwards in the round. Stranded colourwork and duplicate stitch are used to create the colourwork pattern. Centred double decreases are used to create the crown shaping. Use the accompanying template chart within the pattern to plan the colours for your own Clubbie Beanie. You will need to carry the float for the stranded colourwork more than 5 stitches at times. It is suggested that you use an appropriate carrying technique for this. Depending on your cap, smaller groups of colour (such as the yellow in the sample Ocean Grove cap) may be easier to work using duplicate stitch at the end. The sample was knit working the two blue colours as stranded colourwork. The yellow stripes were duplicate stitched after the knitting was completed. I steam blocked the hat prior to working the duplicate stitch, and again after working the duplicate stitch. **Sizing:** To fit head size: 20/51 (22/56, 24/61) inches/cms. Actual hat length: 7¼/18.5 (7½/19, 7¾/19.5) inches/cms) **Skill Level:** Intermediate Depending on your design, you may be required to work three colours in a round. **Techniques used:** knit and purl Decreasing Working in the round Stranded colour work Working more than two colours in a round Duplicate stitch (optional) Surface slip stitch (optional) Working from a chart Reading your work (optional) **Yarn Requirements:** 4ply/fingering weight yarn of approximately: Main Colour: 100/90 (110/100, 120/110) yards/metres and 50/45 yards/metres each of two or more contrast colours. Original Main Colour yarn is a 90% Merino and 10% Possum blend. It has a 3ply worsted spun structure. Contrast Colour yarns are both worsted spun 4ply/fingering weight yarns that are not superwash. The yellow is a hand-dyed superwash yarn. Yardage is approximate and may vary depending on your knitting style and yarn selection.
