I've gone a bit potty for polka dots this autumn and winter, so join me on my cosy spotty journey!
**Construction:**
Knitted bottom up, working in the round, starting with Judy’s magic cast on, then using stockinette stitch which is increased using the m1l/r technique. The main body of the hot water bottle cover is made using 2 colour stranded colourwork, using magic loop is recommended. Decreases are then knitted in stockinette stitch using the ssk/k2tog technique. The neck for the standard size is worked in 2x2 rib, like a collar, and finished using a 2x2 Italian bind-off. The neck for the mini size is worked in 1x1 rib and finished using a 1x1 Italian bind-off.
Colourwork section is fully charted.
**Sizes**:
Mini / Standard
**Measurements:**
Width: Approx. – 13cm/5" 20cm / 8”
Length: Approx. – 22cm/8.5" 35cm / 14” – including neck/cuff (folded)
Measurements within the pattern are given in both metric and imperial.
**Yarn:**
DK Merino yarn. You will require a main colour with 1 contrast colours to make the cover sample. Instructions giving within the pattern on how to make scrappy versions.
Samples made using:
1 & 2: Yarnsmiths Merino DK 50g/110m by Wool Warehouse.
Off-White and Navy
3, 4 & 5: Drops Lima 50g/100m
Off-white/Pear Grey (Mc) and scrappies (Cc).
**Yarn Amounts:**
Mini:
Mc Approx. - 35g / 77m or 1x50g balls
Cc Approx. - 15g / 33m or 1 x 50g ball – (scrappy approx. 2g x 7)
Standard:
Mc Approx. - 70g / 154m or 2x50g balls
Cc Approx. - 30g / 66m or 1 x 50g ball – (scrappy approx. 3g x 11)
(Yarn amounts have been calculated to yarns that are 50g/110m)
Given yarn amounts are to make one hot water bottle cover.
To make a matching pair as show in the sample photos (off-white and navy) you will require 100g of each colour of yarn, 200g in total.
**Needles:**
4mm /size 6 60cm/23” or 100cm/40” (if using the magic loop technique) circular needles (or needles to obtain gauge).
**Gauge:**
23sts x 27rounds = 10x10cm / 4x4 inches in stockinette stitch colourwork in the round, blocked.
(If your plain stst and colour work tensions differ, you may need to change needle size to keep your gauge consistent – swatching is recommended)
**Notions and other equipment:**
2 contrasting ring and 1 locking stitch markers, scissors, tapestry needle and either a 500ml or 2l hot water bottle.
**Special Techniques:**
Judy’s magic cast on, magic loop and either 2x2 or 1x1 Italian bind-off.
