The Seafoam Shirt

The perfect crochet summer shirt doesn’t exist? I would argue that after creating this pattern, I’ve come close — if not nailed it. I wanted to design a shirt you could throw on casually during the day, wear as a breezy cover-up by the pool or on the beach, and then dress up for cocktails as you watch the sunset before heading out for dinner. My problem was the gauge. I wanted something that wasn’t super see-through or holey (a classic crochet struggle), that worked up reasonably quickly, was chic and simple, had a lovely drape, and most importantly, was unisex. So I played around for a long time with different options before settling on the moss stitch (sometimes also called the linen stitch), worked with a 6mm hook and a DK-weight yarn. This is a top-down raglan construction, which I love. The pattern includes instructions for sizes XXS–5XL, but as with most of my raglan designs, you can simply try it on as you go for the perfect custom fit. I also love that this shirt introduced me to new techniques — the curled i‑cord style edging took me ages to figure out, searching through different methods until I finally worked out the one that gave the effect I wanted. The yarn of choice for this — King Cole Linendale — is a DK‑weight blend of cotton, linen, and viscose. The cotton keeps it breathable, the linen adds structure and durability, and the viscose gives a smooth soft finish and helps the fabric drape without feeling heavy. It’s cool to wear, easy to handle, and it holds its shape well even after repeated washing. I fell in love with this yarn at my local independent yarn shop. It’s soft right from the start, but the more you work with it, wear it, and wash it, the softer and more fluid it becomes. I hope you love this pattern as much as I do.
