Happy Knitting ❤️ The third piece in the *By a Lady* collection, the *Fanny Scarf*, brings a bold twist to the timeless charm of Regency-era romance with a striking, textured design. This scarf features an edgy diagonal lace center, with crisp, pronounced ridges that cut across the fabric, making it a fast, engaging, and satisfying project for any skill level. Framed by clean garter stitch tips and borders—with instructions for sizes S, M, and L, plus the flexibility to adjust it to any custom length or width—it’s the perfect way to expand your collection with a piece of literary-inspired luxury that is as fun to knit as it is to wear. The Fanny Scarf is the third piece in the By a Lady collection, designed to be an engaging, quick knit with a bit of a textured edge. While the pattern is written for worsted weight yarn on 4.5 mm needles, it’s very adaptable—you can use anything from fingering to chunky yarn to highlight your favorite fiber. Solid or light tonal colors really pop against the crisp ridges of the diagonal lace, while darker or variegated yarns give the texture a softer, subtler look. Gauge isn’t critical here, so you can relax and enjoy the process. The scarf starts with a clean garter stitch tip before moving into the main pattern. From there, it’s a striking mix of garter borders and an edgy diagonal lace stitch that adds a highly textured, modern touch without being overly fussy. When you’ve reached the desired length, a garter section shapes the other end for a balanced finish. Offered in sizes S, M, and L, this scarf is incredibly flexible and beginner-friendly. Because the stitch repeat is so simple (a multiple of 6 + 8), you can easily adjust both the width and length to create anything from a slim neckerchief to a giant wrap. It’s a fast project, and there are step-by-step video tutorials to help you along the way. My sample is size S and is about 4.25” wide at the widest part (main body) and about 54.75” long after blocking. In this pattern, each consecutive size increases in width by approximately 1.75 - 2”. So, size M should be about 6 - 6.25” wide, and size L should be about 8 - 8.25” wide. I haven’t personally made these sizes, so the measurements may not be exact. Your individual tension could also influence the finished width. Please note that the size instructions (S, M, L) are for width, not length. Make it any length you desire :) Please note that there is no exact yardage required for this pattern. The reason is that, obviously, everyone likes a different scarf length, and I cannot accommodate all of that in the yardage. The same goes for the measurements; I have included the width of S, M, & L in the pattern as well as the length of my sample. Please check out my test knitters’ lovely project pages, where they show off the versatility of this pattern in all sorts of yarns and sizes! All sizes have been tested. This pattern is 7 pages long, but there are only 4 pages of actual knitting instructions. Look at the pattern photos to find a sample page of the pattern!
