East Meets West Mittens

This pattern is designed as a Mystery Knitalong for the month of September 2026. As this is a mystery knitalong, you will initially purchase the introduction only. The pattern will be released in five clues on September 1, 5, 8, 15 and 19, 2026. You will receive an email and your Ravelry library will be updated with a new file to download as each clue is released. To keep the mystery of these mittens a secret as long as possible, all I can tell you now is that these mittens will pay tribute to two Canadian knitting traditions. The design is suitable for two colours of fingering-weight yarn. Instructions are provided to make a longer or shorter mitten. **Degree of Difficulty** This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter with some experience working with charts and knitting in the round. Designer tips are provided for those who are new to stranded colourwork. **Size** Instructions are written for a woman’s small hand with medium and large in brackets. Instructions are provided to make a longer or shorter mitten. **Techniques used in pattern:** • Stranded colourwork • Knitting in the round • Knitting from a chart • Increase stitches (make one left and make one right) • Decrease stitches (Slip, slip, knit and knit two together) **Materials** Sandnes Garn Tynn Peer Gynt fingering weight yarn (100% Norwegian Wool, 205 meters/50 grams) • 1 ball main colour (MC); 1 ball contrast colour (CC). Depending on the size selected, you will need up to 40g (164 m/178 yds) of the MC, and up to 30g (123 m/134 yds) of the CC. Needles: set of 5, 2.75 mm (US#2) double-pointed needles (DPNs); or one 2.75 mm (US#2), 100 cm (40 inch) long circular needle, if you prefer to use the Magic Loop method, or size needed to get gauge. Tapestry needle for finishing. Length of smooth, contrasting colour waste yarn to hold thumb stitches. **Gauge** 9 stitches and 10 rows/ 2.54 cm (1 inch) over stranded pattern, knit in the round. Knitting to the correct gauge is important to achieving the finished measurements noted above. **Finished Measurements** Circumference around fingers: 18.1 cm/7.1 inches [19.3 cm/7.6 inches, 20.3 cm/8 inches] Bottom of cuff to top of fingers: 24.9 cm/9.8 inches [27 cm/10.7 inches, 29.1 cm/11.5 inches] Wrist to top of fingers: 18.6 cm/7.3 inches [20.1 cm/7.9 inches, 22.1 cm/8.7 inches] **Note**: This pattern uses 64 68, 72 stitches around the wrist and the top of the hand.
