Spooky Eyeballs

This is a written crochet pattern for the “Spooky Eyeballs”. Instructions are included that explain how to make ten different low-sew amigurumi eyeballs, which differ in size, iris appearance and presence (or not) of an eyestalk. These eyeballs are great to use as decor, particularly for Halloween, but also would be good to display while playing fantasy tabletop games (e.g. DnD), and/or for whenever you are wanting a spookier aesthetic. The pattern is available in both US and UK terms. The PDF file is 21 pages long with detailed instructions and lots of photos. This pattern is suitable for crocheters that are already familiar with amigurumi and basic crochet stitches/techniques (e.g. in US terms: MR, sc, hdc, inc, dec, colour changing, working into a ch, etc.). For four of the eyeballs, one speciality stitch is also used: a single crochet spike stitch (as well as a small variation of this stitch) – a photo tutorial is included on how to complete the spike stitch. All the eyeballs use a mix of joined and continuous rounds. The eyeballs are considered low-sew as no pieces need to be sewn together, however some basic embroidery is needed to achieve the ‘bloodshot’/veiny appearance of all eyes, as well as the small white reflection on four of the eyes. Materials & Tools Required: • Yarn in colours black, white and your chosen iris colour(s). All in (roughly) the same yarn weight category as each other. • A crochet hook that matches your yarn weight. • Plenty of red thread for embroidering lines • Toy stuffing • Scissors • Tapestry/finishing needle • Stitch marker (recommended) Using a 3mm hook and DK weight yarn my finished eyeballs had the following dimensions: • ‘Small’ eyes: Sphere diameter was 2.4cm (0.9 inch), eyestalk was 6.5cm (2.6 inch) long (unstretched). Similar size to a Bon Bon sweet. • ‘Medium’ eyes: Sphere diameter was 3.6cm (1.4 inch), eyestalk was 7cm (2.75 inch) long (unstretched). Similar size to a ping pong ball. • ‘Large’ eyes: Sphere diameter was 5.8cm (2.3 inch), eyestalk was 9.5cm (3.75 inch) long (unstretched). Similar size to a tennis ball.
