***Inspired by textiles of the Americas, particularly the blankets of New Mexico and Peru, this stranded color work cowl uses bold patterns and earthy colors —red/natural-white/black, or turquoise/natural-white/black. ***Traditionally, textile patterns were not “perfect,” leaving room for Spirit to enter. So as you knit the patterns you will discover several small intentional asymmetries.*** **Gauge**=26 st and 32 rows/4 inches, but gauge not important in a cowl. **Cowl size**: Approximately 11”wide x 36”around **Materials**: Knitting needles: 32 in. circular US size 5: ribbed border & all single color rows. US size 6: stranded knit rows Stitch markers for each repeat, tapestry needle, & your favorite knitting notions. **Yarn:** DK — approximate amounts: black 150 g, white 90 g, red or turquoise 60g (This cowl would also knit well in fingering weight.) ***Looking Glass Yarn Kits: available at www.lookingglassyarn.com in Santa Fe, NM or call 505-995-9649*** *Lanas Meeeh DK Merino- red, white and black Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light- Turquoise 4294, natural white and black 4245* **Instructions:** -The central pattern repeats every 59 stitches, after one star and one diamond motif. -The colored border patterns repeat every 118 stitches, or a double repeat of star and diamond motifs. -Two repeats of the pattern create a cozy cowl, but by repeating the pattern 3, 4 or more times you could make a longer infinity scarf. Each repeat is approximately 18” Ladderback Jacquard: Because of the longer stretches of color, especially in the black and white middle section, I strongly suggest using the ladder back jacquard knitting technique for yarn carries.
