The sea is often important to those who were born near to it, and the way people refer to it reflects its significance to them. We know a gulf is something special when people call it The Gulf. For Neapolitans, the Gulf of Naples is such a thing; to them, it is 'il Golfo', the Gulf. Admittedly the scenery on the Gulf of Naples is beyond incredible, it’s breathtaking. Golfo shawl is a crescent shape shawl knit from the top down. In the shawl body the short, easy-to-memorize lace refers to the waves of the sea. The edge is knit sideways, and it’s attached to the shawl body on-the-go. The undulating lace in the edge reminds me of the silhouette of Vesuvius. The pattern is highly customizable; the shawl body can be worked to any length, ending with any WS row. Note that if modifications are made to the body of the shawl, they will affect the consumption of the CC for the edge. **Finished measurements** Wingspan 150 cm / 59”, depth 44 cm / 17.5” **Needles** 3.75 mm (US 5) - 100 cm / 40” circular needles, or as required to obtain gauge. **Yarn requirements** Decida Merino sw 366m High Twist (100 % Merino wool, 183 m / 50 g) MC: 2 skeins or 366 m / 400 yds of fingering weight yarn. CC: 1 skein or 160 m / 175 yds of fingering weight yarn. Shown in colors Teal (MC) and Silent Lagoon (CC). Note that the sample used 99 g of MC yarn. The pattern allows you to end with any WS row so you can use most of your MC. **Gauge** 22 sts x 26 rows = 10 cm /4” with 3.75 mm (US 5) needles in Golfo lace after blocking. 20 sts x 22 rows = 10 cm / 4” with 3.75 mm (US 5) needles in Vesuvio edge after blocking. Note that the row gauge in the Vesuvio edge needs to match the st gauge in the Golfo lace to avoid puckering. Small differences can be handled by blocking. (NOTE: Gauge is not crucial, but it will affect finished dimensions and yarn consumption.) **Notions** Tapestry needle. Optional: stitch markers for pattern repeats. **Techniques used** Knitting flat, Garter tab CO, simple lace with short repeats on RS, basic increases and decreases, kyok increase, elastic BO.
