Groundbreaking!
This dainty three-dimensional rose is ideal for garment detailing and flower crowns, and it’s the perfect way to use up small quantities of scrap yarn!
The rose is knit flat, then folded, seamed, and sewn into shape. I recommend sizing down your needles quite a lot—this is not a mistake! By knitting on smaller needles you overpack the stitches, creating the desired ruffled rose petal texture. Sizing down also results in a sturdier fabric, which helps the finished rose hold its shape.
If you complete this pattern as written, the result will be a flattish sort of rose. Instructions for modifying the pattern to create a taller, more “rose-shaped” rose are also included.
The accompanying leaves are designed to be slightly asymmetrical on purpose to give a more natural appearance. The leaves are knit flat using the same size needles as the rose.
To complete this pattern, you will need straight or circular knitting needles, scissors, and a tapestry needle for finishing. You may also choose to use one removable stitch marker (optional).
No specific gauge swatch information has been provided. This is due to the small size and three-dimensional nature of the design, as well as the wide variety of yarn weight options included in the pattern. However, a good rule of thumb is that your needles should *feel* too small for your yarn. For instance, if you are knitting a rose using Malabrigo Rios, the pattern recommends using size US 3 (3.25mm) needles.
