Fit-a-Long-Time Socks/Mitts

While expecting my first baby and looking at all the adorable baby clothes, I was surprised by how many sizes there are. Even more disappointingly, I realized that many of the things I planned to knit her would realistically only fit for a few weeks, or, in the best-case scenario, a few months. That’s how the idea of the FALT collection was born. I hope that you enjoy this first sock/mitt design and my upcoming designs for this collection. And I hope that the finished object serves the little recipient for, well, a long time. :) This pattern is inspired by the spiral sock patterns popular during WWII. Since the socks are heel-less, they can accommodate different foot sizes and are a very simple and straight-forward knit. These socks are also completely reversible, so there is no right or wrong side when parents (or the kiddos themselves) put them on. Also, they can easily double as mittens for newborns. **Construction** The socks/mitts are knit top-down with symmetrical decreases at the end. The spiral rib pattern eliminates the need for a separate heel construction for socks. **Sizes** Preemie-2.5 yrs/EU sizes 14-24, (9mo-5.5 yrs/EU sizes 19-26) Finished length: 16.5cm/6½ inches, (21.5cm/8½ inches) Finished circumference: 13cm/5 inches, (15cm/6 inches), stretches to 20cm/ 7¾ inches, (22cm/8¾ inches) The sample was knit in the size Preemie-2.5 yrs. **Yarn and materials** • Fingering weight yarn (plus approx. 10% buffer): 84m/92yds/20g, (126m/138yds/30g) • Recommended yarn: Maruma Hand Dyed Yarns Superwash Merino Sock (80% superwash merino, 20% nylon 210m/230yds/50g). • A set of 2.5mm (US #1.5) 15cm/6 inch double-pointed needles. • A tapestry needle for weaving in ends. • 1 stitch marker. **Gauge** 18 sts x 24 rows = 5x5cm/ 2x2 inches in rib pattern, flattened but unstretched.
