Inspired by the beautiful Kazak designs originating in the Caucasian mountains, this throw captures some of the motifs and rich colours commonly found in this intricate, decorative style of hand-woven woollen rug. It brings to mind flying carpets, and the magic and mysticism of Eastern folklore. Originally intended to be an afghan or a sofa throw (or even a cot blanket for a sophisticated toddler!) the design could of course be put to other uses. Some great ideas from tester Rosy: make it in pure cotton with a finer hook for a wall hanging; use 100% wool and felt it, to make an actual rug, or use just the centre square for a cushion front. Also if you wanted to make a rug you could stitch on a buckram hessian backing for added stiffness, or place it on a felt or rubberised base cut to size. The Stylecraft shades specified have been carefully chosen to match the real thing as closely as possible, and will give the most authentic result. Different palettes and yarn weights can of course be substituted, using the appropriate hooks. Yarn suggested: Stylecraft Special DK, 100 g balls: Claret x 3\* Parchment x 2\* Cypress x 2\* Denim x 1 Camel x 1 Vintage Peach x 1 Midnight x 1 (\*estimated maximum quantities allowing for wastage) Hook sizes needed: 4 mm (G) for the main body of the throw, plus (if possible) a selection of smaller hooks: 2.75 mm (C), 3.25 mm (D) and 3.75 mm (F) for the appliqués as indicated. The pattern is comprises an introduction and five numbered sections, and is clearly written with detailed explanations, tips and hints to help you along the way. It is a fairly complex design and repays very careful attention to stitch counts etc - it definitely needs concentration! There are step-by-step photographic illustrations throughout, so you can check your work as you go.
