Crochet has always been my safe, happy place. My earliest memories go back to when I was five years old, in Italy, making endless chains under a fig tree in the summer, sitting beside my grandmother and the other ladies. All these years later, when life feels heavy, I still reach for a hook. Crochet has a way of making things feel lighter and calmer. When I crochet, worries fade into the background, and my focus shifts to color, rhythm, and movement. As colors come together, images slowly emerge: places, moments, and stories. I experience the world strongly through color; at times, even sound and taste appear as colors in my mind. These impressions sit quietly until, one day, something clicks and a pattern begins to take shape. I design my patterns in a traditional way. While we live in a world full of technology, shortcuts, and AI tools, I rely on memory, instinct, and simple color pegs. This slower, more thoughtful process is how my designs come to life. I tend to think of crochet patterns as belonging to two categories: Mind-wandering patterns: easy, rhythmic designs that allow you to relax and let your thoughts drift; focus patterns: designs that require full concentration and attention. Neither is better than the other. The right pattern depends entirely on where you are in life. The Ailsa Craig Blanket belongs to the first category of my designs: calm, rhythmic, and gently repetitive. It is designed to be soothing and relaxing to crochet, allowing you to work comfortably while listening to an audiobook, watching television, or chatting with others. The stitch pattern is easy to memorize, grows quickly, and offers a strong sense of progress, making it suitable for beginners as well as experienced crocheters seeking a mindful project. The blanket is worked in soft, squishy chenille yarn, chosen for its rich color, comforting weight, and beautifully tactile texture. The inspiration for this design comes from the view outside my window. From my favorite chair, I look towards Ailsa Craig, the first sight I see each morning and the last at night. The grays reflect the granite of the island, famously used for curling stones, while the remaining colors echo the shifting sea, nearby greens, garden flowers, and the occasional seabird passing through. This blanket is my way of capturing that view in yarn. I hope it brings you the same calm, comfort, and quiet joy that it has brought me. With love, Lucia x
