Olde School Hat

This is a double-layered hat, where each layer is knit separately top-down. Why I love top-down hats: -You play less yarn chicken! When you knit a hat bottom up, it is tricky to gauge when to start your crown decreases to ensure you don't run out of yarn. With top-down hats, there's no worry; you can simply end the hat when you run out of yarn. -You can try it on as you go! For the same reason I love top-down sweaters, I love top-down hats. Being able to try on your hat as you knit ensures you reach the fit you dreamed of. -You get the shaping out of the way early! Once the crown is done, you can just cruise along with straight stockinette! -I also find the crown to look cleaner. My increases are much neater than my decreases, and when you knit a hat top-down, you never decrease! The colorwork chart is designed to be as easy as possible, easy enough to be someone's first colorwork project! It uses just two colors with a creative design that makes catching floats unnecessary. For additional simplicity in knitting the colorwork, two colorwork charts are included in the pattern. You can choose which one to follow depending on whether your main color or contrast color is dark. The hat is written to be one size stitch-wise, but there are two gauges included, corresponding to two different fits: Looser fit gauge: 22 stitches x 30 rounds per 4”/10cm Fits comfortably on adult male. Tighter fit gauge: 24 stitches x 32 rounds per 4”/10cm Fits slightly snug on adult female. This pattern uses DK or Worsted weight yarn. I used: Baa Ram Ewe’s Pure British Breeds yarn, 100g/223yds. classified as DK, worked in Tighter gauge BC Garn’s Loch Lomond, 50g/164yds. classified as Worsted, worked in Looser gauge Knitting for Olive’s Heavy Merino, 50g/137yds. classified as Worsted, worked in Looser gauge Yarn needed: Outer Hat: about 50g/135yds total Main Color/ Color A: about 35g/100yds total Colorwork Color/ Color B: about 12g/35yds total Inner Hat: about 37g/90yds total Colorwork Color/ Color B: about 28g/65yds total (Optional) Ribbing Color/ Color C: about 9g/25yds total 4.5mm (US7) needles are only required if you knit colorwork tighter than stockinette
