Have you ever tried to use your phone or get your keys out your pocket when wearing mittens? These mittens make it possible to do those things but without taking the mittens off! As a bonus, they are perfect for romantic walks with your partner because you can hold hands while wearing them. **Construction** This pattern is worked from the bottom up (from the cuff to the top of the mitten). We start by casting on stitches for the cuff and working a rolled hem. Then we work the cuff in ribbing, changing colors to make a striped pattern. After the cuff, we create the body of the mitten. We knit the thumb gusset, increasing the width of the mitten. We slip the thumb stitches onto spare yarn and add the palm opening to make these mittens convertible. At the end, we work the palm opening flap and we finish the thumb. There’s an optional thumb hole for easy phone use. **Sizes available:** Size | unstretched circumference at the cuff | unstretched circumference at the palm | length of the hand portion of the mitten (customizable) 1 | 14 cm (5.5 in) | 16 cm (6.3 in) | 17 cm (6.7 in) 2 | 16 cm (6.3 in) | 18 cm (7.1 in) | 19 cm (7.5 in) 3 | 18 cm (7.1 in) | 20 cm (7.9 in) | 21 cm (8.3 in) 4 | 20 cm (7.9 in) | 22 cm (8.7 in) | 23 cm (9 in) Choose your size based on your palm circumference and how fitted you like your mittens to be. You can go for positive ease or negative ease but in my opinion, negative ease works better with the palm opening. The light green sample is shown in size 1 on 18 cm hand. **Gauge** 20 sts and 28 rows to 10cm/4in in stockinette stitch in the round blocked. Suggested needle size: 3.5 mm but use whatever needle size necessary to achieve gauge. **Yarn** You will need 150, 160, (170, 180) m/ 165, 175, (185, 200) yd of worsted weight yarn or the alternative yarns held together (I used fingering yarn held together with heavy lace weight). If you using two or three yarns held together, you’ll need the same quantity of each of those yarns. Please note that these are just approximations. Total yarn usage will depend on the yarn you use (fiber content, ply, etc.), your personal gauge, and any modifications you may make. I used scrap yarn for all my samples. **Light green sample:** Sandnes Garn Tynn Peer Gynt (100% wool, 205m per 50g) in 8733 held together with Furora Yarns Dream Come True (100% suri alpaca, 200m per 50g) and Tynn Peer Gynt in 1012 with Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk (77% alpaca, 23% silk, 140m per 25g) in 01 **Light/dark green sample:** Tynn Peer Gynt in 8733 with Furora Yarns Dream Come True and Tynn Peer Gynt in 8082 with Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk in 11 **Pink/red sample:** Tynn Peer Gynt in 4236 with Fonty Saperlipopette in 5009 and Tynn Peer Gynt in 4813 with Fonty Saperlipopette in 5013 **Pink/white sample:** Ficolana Peruvian (100% wool, 100m per 50g) in 227 with Fonty Saperlipopette in 5013 and Ficolana Peruvian in 101 with Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk in 01 **Valentine's Day modifications** I thought that these mittens would be a perfect project for Valentine's Day. I added 9 different duplicate stitch charts and instructions on how to make a bow.
