Rising Horse is a free introductory mosaic crochet design and a small window into my updated PDF format. This is one of my earlier designs. I still like its mood, movement, and ornamental character, but I also want to be honest: the artwork is not as polished as my newer pieces. It may not be perfect in execution, yet it gives a good idea of my general style, aesthetics, chart structure, and the way I now prepare my PDF files. I have recently upgraded my PDF layout and written instructions. Over time, I plan to bring my other listings closer to this new format too. This free design lets you try the updated structure before choosing one of my larger or more detailed designs. The download includes two PDF files: - UK terms - US terms Each PDF includes both construction options: - for crocheting in straight rows - for crocheting from the center For each version, the PDF includes: - preview image - full chart - print order page - print layout pages - stitch-by-stitch description - optimized/optimised description - linear numeric notation - method passport for the numeric notation - clickable contents for easier navigation inside the PDF The linear numeric notation is my own way of presenting mosaic crochet rows as a compact sequence of numbers, symbols, and repeats. It is included as an additional route through the design, not as a replacement for the chart or written instructions. You can choose the format that feels most comfortable for you. This method was tested by 12 crocheters from middle and older age groups. The results were far beyond my boldest expectations, and that test gave me the confidence to include linear numeric notation in my PDFs instead of keeping it only as my personal working tool. It does take some effort at the beginning: you need a little time to understand how the notation works. But once it clicks, it can help you crochet faster and with fewer mistakes, especially in long rows, repeats, and those very familiar moments when your hands can still work but your brain is already sitting in the corner with a cup of tea. This free file is meant as a sample of my updated PDFs: the chart, the written routes, the layout, and the overall approach. It is a modest little horse from my earlier stable, but it still knows where the road begins. I am always happy to receive feedback, questions, and constructive criticism. This free pattern is also a way for me to hear how the updated PDF format works for different crocheters. Please also note: my designs are not tied to one fixed gauge, yarn weight, or hook size. The final size depends on your yarn, hook, tension, and personal crochet style. If Ravelry displays something like “1 repeat = 10 cm”, this is only a technical field required by the platform, not a mistake in the pattern and not a strict gauge instruction.
