North Star Resistance Hat Yarn 50 grams Dark Blue DK weight 50 grams Light Blue DK weight Circular needles US 5 -16” length US 7 -16” length Other notions Yarn needle Snips Cardboard for creating star template White felt White sewing thread and needle GAUGE: US 7 needle = 4” Instructions: Ribbing: With smaller needle, CAST ON 84 stitches with dark blue yarn. JOIN and place BOR (beginning of row) marker being careful to not twist stitches waiting to be worked on the cord. K2P2 rib stitch for approximately 20 rows or 3 inches of ribbing. Main: Switch to US 7 or larger needle used to get gauge. KNIT in the round for the next 26 rows. ROW 27: (begin intarsia work) JOIN light blue yarn to begin the row and knit 1 stitch, then knit 41 stitches with dark blue while carrying light blue behind every third stitch. Use light blue to make the 42nd stitch, then continue knitting with dark blue for remaining stitches in this row. ROW 28: INCREASE the use of the light blue stitches on either side of the initial light blue stitch on Row 27 so that there are three light blue stitches on this row twice. This will begin creating a triangle shape using the light blue stitches. ROW 29-33: CONTINUE using the light blue yarn to knit one stitch on either side of the existing light blue stitches. (You should now have the beginning of two light blue triangle shapes emerging in the existing 84 stitches. ROW 34-45: knit 2 light blue stitches before the existing light blue stitches from previous row as well as 2 light blue stitches after the existing lt. blue stitches of the previous row. ROW 46-54: knit all 84 stitches in light blue. ROW 55: pass BOR marker, K 7sts and place another marker. Continue to K and place markers every 7 sts until end of row. ROW 56: (begin decreasing sts. for crown shaping) pass BOR marker then K2tog, *knit to 3 sts before next marker then SSK, pass marker, K2tog, repeat from * ROW 57: knit only row REPEAT ROWS 56-57 until 10 sts remain. CUT yarn leaving a long tail and using yarn needle pick up remaining 10 sts. Pull to bring together the remaining sts and secure ends by weaving them in on the interior of the fabric. CUT template from image of the North Star and make two using white felt by tracing and cutting. The finished star is 2” square. SEW onto hat just below the light blue points.
