The Baby Loon Sweater

This pattern meets the gender inclusive standards for pattern writing set by Knit Them (Texel). The Loon Sweater was originally created as a Christmas present for my dad, and was inspired by the many summers we’ve spent listening to the loons call each other across the lake. It's a design that works for everyone, regardless of gender and age. The matching adult sweater can be found under the name 'The Loon Sweater'. **Construction:** This sweater is a simple drop shoulder design, and is knit from the top down. It is designed to have 13-18cm / 5-7” of positive ease. You’ll begin by working the back yoke flat, shaping the shoulders with German short rows. Then you will work in stockinette before introducing the loon band using stranded colourwork (also worked flat). The front yoke is then worked flat, starting with picking up and knitting each shoulder separately while shaping the neckline. The front shoulders are then joined to complete the neck opening, and the loon band continues across the front in stranded colourwork (worked flat). Once the front and back yokes are complete, they are joined to form the body, which is knit in the round. Stitches are then picked up for the sleeves and neckline, both of which are worked in the round. **Sizes:** 1 (2, 3, 4) (5, 6, 7, 8, 9) ***These numbers do not correspond to children's years; please choose a size based on the measurements listed.*** **Finished Sweater Chest Circumference:** 47 (52, 56, 62, 66) (72, 76, 82, 86) cm / 18.5 (20.5, 22, 24.5, 26) (28.5, 30, 32, 34)” **Gauge:** 20st x 26 rows = 10cm x 10cm (4” x 4”) washed and blocked **Suggested Needles:** 4.5mm (US 7) circular needles, 4.5mm (US7) double pointed needles (cord length recommendations: 40, 60, 80 or 100 cm) **Suggest Yarn:** Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino (50g = 125m) Main colour: 280 (330, 385, 420, 475) (530, 575, 650, 700) metres Contrast colour: 50 (50, 65, 70, 70) (78, 90, 105,120) metres Loons: 40 (40, 40, 50, 50) (50, 60, 60, 60) metres **Additional Materials:** Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch marker, measuring tape *The sweaters in the pattern photos are knit using Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino in the colours Ice Blue, Blue Tit, and Eucalyptus for the main colour, Cloud for the white bands, and Coal for the loons.
